We usually have scheduled days in Chinatown, but whenever we travel to meetings in Manhattan, etc we always use it as an opportunity to meet people!
We met a lovely Russian girl on a metro whose flight was that night to return home to Moscow. She had been in Utah over the summer and a family had given her the Book of Mormon. She was such a happy young lady- just glowing! Long story short, she gave us her contact information, and really wants to meet with missionaries now at home!
There was a sweet woman on a subway from Turkey, but living in New York. She was very interested in family history and gave us her contact information and times available to learn more. President Nelson's words and encouragement about family history are inspired. So many people have been interested and already know the importance of genealogy. She also was so happy to receive a Book of Mormon. The man who had been across from us on the subway happened to be right behind us when we exited, even though we had dropped some things on the subway and had a conversation with someone before leaving. He was just glowing and after we gave him a card and testified, we had a nice chat and he was anxious to have a Book of Mormon as well! It was awesome.
There were so many inspired stories; Sister Jacobson and I were on a split and I started talking to a Swiss-french family on a subway. We of course were talking about blessings and the mother said she had just been saved by angels. She had almost died in a car crash. It was really touching because Sister Jacobson had prepared a scripture in French that morning and had it open on her tablet (1 Nephi 21:16). We knew that it was the hand of the Lord. The lady sitting next to her was so touched as well and was glad to receive a Book of Mormon.
We met a lady who spoke Cantonese after visiting a sick member from our ward. She is so sweet and excited to learn more about Jesus Christ! She is a caretaker and is often busy, but is also taking citizenship classes right now, so we feel like it would be a good idea to start a free citizenship class as well!
The ward members are really awesome and involved. The are excited with ideas and willing to help with the work. They are also so serviceable! They make the missionaries food to eat after every ward correlation. Wow. We have made a point to ask everyone if there is anyone they know who is sick, pregnant, moving, just had a baby, or would be interested in the Gospel that we could serve or teach!
We have enjoyed being able to meet with many cute, sweet people, and the work is progressing!
Funny: Sister Lin got her arm stuck in a subway door. A nice young man helped pry it open enough for her to get it out. Haha.
My trio is awesome! Sister Bu, Sister Lin, (Sister Wilcox)! We can teach in Mandarin and Cantonese :) and have used (a littlr bit of) Spanish, German, Portugese, and English this past week as well! New York is so diverse.
Daily bread. I'm thankful for the opportunity to convert and be more converted myself. Urgency of the Gospel. This is our time of probation! We must learn all that we can and be the best we can be! Hard work, and obedience are such important principles that have blessed my life so much, and are so important in missionary work as well. I know that pushing ourselves in learning, working, serving, and loving is so important. Always remember Him. Do all we can to be and to become a Disciple of Christ. President Nelson and Elder Gong came to talk to the missionaries. It was so spiritual and such a powerful atmosphere. We each shook their hand. They are called of God-- His inspired leaders. I am so thankful for their witness and for their examples. Let's do all that we can to be like that.
